Climate change affects everyone. The icecaps are shrinking, the deserts are growing, and the weather is becoming increasingly unstable. These are the same effects predicted by global warming theory. The general consensus among the scientific community is that burning of fossil fuels is a major contributor to global warming. More
In addition to the pollution, our non-renewable fossil fuel resources are being depleted. As long as we continue to consume fossil fuels, we will need to look further for these resources, pay higher prices, and rely on politically unstable countries to supply us. More
Renewable energy is a solution. Replacing energy supplied by coal, natural gas, or oil, with energy from the earth, sun, or wind does two things. First, we stop polluting the atmosphere, and reduce the amount of greenhouse gasses being emitted. Second, we save our fossil fuels for other uses.
Not all renewables are created equal and each has a role to play in reducing our dependence on fossil fuels. Most renewable energy sources are intermittent, i.e, solar plants only produce energy in the daytime, and wind farms only produce energy when the wind is blowing. Other renewable technologies, such as tidal power, are still yet to be proven. By comparison, geothermal energy can be counted on to generate electricity throughout the day and night. Geothermal energy provides a cost effective, steady, supply of electricity. More
