In the early 1980’s Amax Exploration conducted 3,000 meters of temperature gradient drilling which identified the location for the first deep production well. This prospect is located near the Nevada-California border in Esmeralda County, Nevada, approximately midway between Reno and Las Vegas. A 55 kV power line runs through the 29 square km lease.
Geothermometry suggests a minimum reservoir temperature of 155°C with indications up to 225°C. Using a Monte Carlo simulation the potential geothermal reserves at Alum are estimated to have a 90% probability of generating 41 MW, and a 50% probability of exceeding 90 MW (Source: New Geothermal Site Identification and Qualification, PIER study prepared by GeothermEx, 2004). A 41 MW power plant supplies enough electricity for 33,000 homes.
